Born at QCH, Now Working at QCH: Celebrating 25 Years of the Childbirth Unit
This week, we celebrated 25 years of the QCH Childbirth Unit!
To mark the occasion, we asked our community to share their memories, and the responses we received were truly amazing. Among the stories, we discovered some of our current team members were actually born right here at QCH!
Here are a few of their stories...
Christine Rowe
“I gave birth to my daughter Hailey Rowe in the Baby Unit in 2001, 23 years ago! In the photos attached you will see the pictures were taken at the hospital and Hailey's sister Kelsie Rowe was brought in to meet her new sister! The interesting part is that now both sisters work at the QCH! Kelsie is 26 years old and is an RN in the ICU and Hailey is 23 years old and works at the QCH as a CSR Tech! (Medical Device Reprocessing) Both sisters love working at the Q and both approved this message being shared!”
Kaitlyn Boeyen
“I was born at QCH on May 4th, 2000 at 8:17am weighing 6lbs 12oz. The doctor who delivered me was Dr. Johri. Funny enough they were actually on their way home in their car when they got the call to come back to QCH as I was in distress as the cord was wrapped around my neck. Due to this I was born 3 weeks early! My lovely mother and I have actually both worked at QCH, My mother Kathryn Boeyen worked there for 5 years and I have worked there for 4 years and still counting. Qch is a special place for us we thank all of the amazing staff who continue to make a welcoming, comforting and positive environment for everyone who walks in the door. Here are some photos of me with my mom still wearing the QCH bracelet and a photo of me now 24 years later!”
Tracy Harriss
“My name is Tracy Harriss. My husband Ray Harriss and I both work here at the QCH.
All 3 children were born here at the QCH childbirth unit. Back in the early 2000’s I was working in a high stress job in the High Tech sector and while I was there, I decided that I wanted to volunteer to get my foot in the door as High Tech was laying off a pile of people at the time and I was not sure if I had my job week to week. My 1st choice was to volunteer in the Mom/baby unit. I got the opportunity to and had a great time volunteering in the short time I was here. My OB worked here as well and unfortunately when I was put on bed rest, I had to step down from volunteering. In 2007, I started working here in the Call Centre and the Cardiopulmonary Department until I found out I was expecting our 3rd child. I was only here for 3 Months and then I was off having our 3rd baby. I had my year of maternity leave and came back to my job in Cardiopulmonary. 17 years later, I still work in the Cardiopulmonary Department.
When I was pregnant for my 1st baby (Kohle) I was in pre-term labor at 25 weeks due to all the stress from my job. I was brought in and was taken great care of by the staff. I was put on strict bed rest until he was born. Kohle was born on his due date (August 12, 2004). Now years later, Kohle is a Porter here at the QCH.
In March of 2006, our second baby was born here. Haley was born on March 4, 2006. She decided that she wanted to see this world quick and because of this, her nickname in the special care nursery was” I am mucousy”. This was on her crib as I walked the halls of the childbirth unit. The nurses brought her into my room every 3 hours to feed her then she was taken back to the special care nursery where she was getting special attention.
In September of 2007, our last baby was born here. Hanna was born on September 4, 2007. I had a midwife for her. We just made it to the QCH at 05:00 and by 05:42 she was born. We had a great experience with her.
I want to extend my congratulations on 25 years for our childbirth unit.”
