High school students complete co-op placement QCH
Five students from Holy Trinity and All Saints High School have just completed their co-operative placement at Queensway Carleton Hospital.
The program provides students with the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge, and habits of mind, all while earning high school credits and working in the community.
Here’s what they had to say about their experience.
Abby Floysvik
Co-op placement: Diagnostic Imaging
“As a diagnostic imaging co-op student, I've been so lucky to have seen so many aspects of the hospital, with the majority being imaging. I've been given the opportunity to go to all the diagnostic departments, such as X-ray, CT, MRI, mammography, and more. My main responsibility at this placement is to clean rooms after patients have finished their scans or procedures. A lot of what I do at my placement is observing; I’ve been able to see so many different types of procedures, scans, and even surgeries! I've been so fortunate to see multiple orthopedic surgeries and general surgeries. Additionally, I have been able to follow the respiratory therapy team and observe patient care in the ICU. At this placement, I have done a lot of shadowing. I've had the opportunity to shadow radiology technicians, radiologists, respiratory therapists, internal medicine doctors, and different types of surgeons.”

Co-op placement: Ambulatory Care Clinic
“As a co-op student, my daily tasks consisted of making packages (Day Stay, SSTIC, COPD) and then handing out questionnaires to the patients. I also had the opportunity to shadow doctors which was super exciting! I’m very grateful for this experience because it has allowed me to gain hands-on-experience and exposure to a hospital setting. I really enjoyed my co-op placement, I want to thank all the staff in the Ambulatory Clinic for this amazing experience. Co-op placement: Diagnostic Imaging
“My time at this hospital has been nothing short of incredible, exhilarating, and exciting. I am completing my placement in Diagnostic Imaging. Thanks to my awesome manager in DI, Lisa, I’ve have had the opportunity to see X-rays, CTs, and MRIs. The most exciting part was being able to see OR cases. Entering the OR for the first time was truly amazing as you get to see all the surgeons and other nurses working in unity to help the patient. This co-op experience has helped me gain a new perspective on what the DI department really does. I was even able to see the ED, ICU, cardiopulmonary, ultrasound and much more. Throughout these opportunities, I’ve been able to expand my knowledge, see different procedures and meet new people. My goal is to become an anesthesiologist one day, being able to have this experience has made me want to pursue my goal even more now!”

Co-op placement: Chronic Disease Program
“My career goal is to eventually become a surgeon. I will be attending U of T this fall. As a co-op student in the ambulatory care clinic, I am involved in both administrative and clinical operations at the hospital. I truly loved waking up each day knowing I could either work in the STICC clinic and learn about venous statis ulcers with Dr.Majewski (who truly is passionate about what he does and goes above and beyond for his patients) or even learn about carpal tunnel syndrome from the amazing Dr. Chan and Dr. Smith ( doctors who truly inspired me to pursue my dreams in becoming a surgeon like them). I want thank my incredible supervisor Cathy and Stacey for letting me help with important project work. Additionally, I loved doing patient appointment reminder calls with Doni, and faxing/photocopying and laughing with Debbie.”

Co-op placement: Out-Patient Physiotherapy Clinic
“During my time at the physio department at QCH, I got to delve into the field of assisting patients in becoming stronger and more mobile. Working alongside experienced physiotherapists, I gained valuable insights into the importance of personalized care and the incredible impact it can have on someone's life. It was a practical experience that strengthened my love for medicine and assisting people in leading fulfilling lives. I also got the opportunity to work on administrative duties in the physiotherapy department. This involved handling patient records and helping with paperwork. I was able to observe firsthand the application of theory through shadowing, which strengthened my comprehension of the fundamentals of physiotherapy.”
