Kimberley Brown in the OR
Kimberley is a Patient Care Assistant in our Operating Rooms. She circles around the ORs during surgery to provide anything needed, so the surgical teams don’t have to stop.
“As a single mom with two children, I was working seasonal jobs but knew I needed something full-time to give my children a good home and all the opportunities they needed to thrive. In 2003, an opportunity came up where I could have full-time employment at QCH as a Patient Assistant and learn on the job. I chose QCH because it was a smaller hospital where I could learn and make myself at home. Over the past 20 years, I’ve learned about everything in the operating rooms.”
During the pandemic, Kimberley worked on many different units. She connected with Hilder Langwa, a Birth Unit Aide in Childbirth who she looks up to: “Hilder is also a strong, independent Black woman who has always been very supportive of me.”
After 20 years at QCH, Kimberley feels very knowledgeable about her role. Her advice for young people starting today is to “be wise – open eyes, open ears, and try to listen and learn as much as you can. If you have lots of questions – ASK because that’s the only way you’ll learn.”
Kimberley has seen a lot of changes over the years, with technology upgrades among the most impactful.
With retirement on her horizon, Kimberley plans to set the plan in motion on her birthday this spring. She already has her eye on a Hawaiian cruise and plans to spend as much time as possible on the East Coast with her Mom.
