25 Years of the QCH Childbirth Program

This week, we're celebrating 25 years of QCH's Childbirth Program!

Since 1999, our Childbirth Program has grown to have one of Ontario's largest hospital-based obstetrical services. With close to 200 dedicated professionals—including nurses, midwives, obstetricians, pediatricians, lactation consultants, support staff and more—working together to provide exceptional care. From the Birth Unit to the Mother and Baby Unit, the Special Care Nursery, and our Outpatient Clinics, we have supported thousands of families with compassion and care.

By the Numbers

Since November 1999, here's what we've been up to…

  • Number of baby girls born: 29,886

  • Number of baby boys born: 30,753

  • Number of twins born: 651 sets of twins

  • Total Number of Births: 60,639

Celebrating Our Legacy

Our journey started with the transition of The Grace Hospital's Newborn Program in 1999. During this time, QCH completed Phase 1 of its expansion, part of the provincial hospital restructuring. This phase included the integration of the former Grace Hospital's program and the opening of a new, state-of-the-art birthing centre. This milestone set the stage for the growth and success we celebrate today.

A Full-Circle Moment

In 1999, we welcomed our very first baby, Melissa Lafferty. Fast forward to 2023, Melissa returned to give birth to her first child. Now, she's expecting her second baby in June 2025! What a full-circle moment! Melissa, her mom Cynthia, and her daughter Maciee joined us to celebrate 25 years.

We're deeply grateful to our patients, families, and team who have been part of this journey. Together, we've built something extraordinary. Here's to 25 years and many more ahead!
