Celebrating Medical Device Reprocessing Week

Have you ever wondered what hospitals do with used tools and supplies?

Reusable equipment goes to our Medical Device Reprocessing Department (MDRD) to be cleaned and repacked for use. The cycle of reprocessing includes:

  1. Decontamination

  2. Assembly

  3. Sterilization

  4. Storage/distribution

The MDRD plays a vital role in infection prevention and control. They ensure our staff are equipped with the tools needed to provide patient care and preform procedures.

Quick facts:

  • QCH’s MDRD consists of 42 team members.

  • Over 177,000 items are reprocessed at QCH per year.

  • More than 10,000 scopes are reprocessed annually.

The department sterilizes items ranging from bedpans to plates and screws used in orthopedic and plastic surgery.

Thank you to our MDRD team for keeping our patients and staff safe!
