QCH Welcomes back Co-op Students

Serena and Abbey are the future of healthcare. They’re local high school students working towards a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) in Health and Wellness, a designation on the Ontario Secondary School Diploma that allows them to focus their learning on a specific economic sector.

One of the courses is designated as a co-op placement. For the Fall 2022 semester, QCH welcomed these two students as part of the relaunch of our coop program. Since late September, Serena and Abbey have supported and shadowed various healthcare roles in the ambulatory care clinic, diagnostic imaging department, orthopedic clinic, dysplasia, medical day, cardiopulmonary unit, and the endoscopy and cystoscopy clinic.

The students help with administrative work and, when possible, observe nursing staff. Work consists of calling patients regarding appointments, putting together their charts when they come in, and helping schedule new appointments.

I’ve learned that nurses are much more involved with their patients than I expected. They work extremely hard and must be patient when dealing with many situations. It requires a lot of focus and patience, which I’ve come to admire.
