Childbirth during COVID-19

Having a new baby is never easy – imagine during a pandemic!  Your support circle is more limited.  Depression and anxiety can be higher.  Masks are everywhere.

Have you had a COVID baby?   What advice would you give to a new mom? Share your stories and photos – you can help some others understand what to expect.

We caught up with Abby Montmigny, who gave birth at QCH this past November. Her advice to you:

“Congrats Mama! I know it can be difficult - all these masks and rules, while being so pregnant, but know that you are in great hands with the QCH birthing unit team, they will take care of you, your birth partner and your baby, and don't forget to ask if you need help or anything. You have the best support team you can ask for and they will make you feel at home so sit back, try to relax and don’t forget push from your bum!

I had a great time giving birth at QCH. Even during COVID-19, the process before and after was quick and efficient. The one thing that stuck to me the most was how they treat their patients. The way my doctor and nurses catered to my needs, made me comfortable - I sure felt like I was giving birth at home. We had to wear masks the whole time and they took all precautions needed which my husband and I appreciated. It was my second child (first was born in QCH as well in 2018). My nurse, who checked me in and stayed with me during my labour and birthing process, and Dr. Sunita Lal were AMAZING. Giving birth is an intimate, special moment, that can be challenging and having a good support team (doctor, nurses, staff, husband/birth partner) around me made it easier.

I wanted to mention that the hospital food was great, I really enjoyed it and so did my husband. Since he couldn't just go out, they brought him food too.

Soon after I gave birth my son, Edward, had high sugar levels and they took such good care of him and made sure everything was good before we came home. The Special Care Nursery unit and the physician who looked after him during his first two days of life was amazing - he answered all our questions, gave us referrals and took his time to explain us everything and also my nurses. I must have requested so many things 100x and they did not hesitate to help me or my husband. One nurse that looked after me even fed Edward so that my husband and I can eat and get "a break." We talked and shared stories. It was amazing.

Thank you!
