MRT Week!
Happy MRT Week to our fabulous group of Medical Radiation Technologists!
What is an MRT, you might ask?
MRTs (Medical Radiation Technologists) are highly trained and skilled healthcare professionals who work with a variety of advanced diagnostic imaging equipment to produce optimal imaging for physicians to be able to give patients accurate diagnoses and care. An MRT is an essential member of the healthcare team. We work in 4 different disciplines:
Nuclear Medicine (NM)
Magnetic Resonance (MRI)
Radiation Therapy (RTT)
Radiology
Radiology makes up 80% of the 10,000 members of the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists.
You can find us performing imaging in the Emergency Department, the OR, any patient's room performing mobile imaging, or you may find us in our department performing plain radiography (ie: x-rays of chests, bones, joints, spines, etc) mammography, fluorography (real-time imaging to show how the systems of the body function, or computerized tomography (CT) detailed cross-sectional images of the body. And this year, you can find us at the COVID-19 Testing and Care Centre on Moodie performing chest imaging for patients in need of our care.
We work hands on with patients everyday, always adapting our practice within accepted standards to deliver the highest quality of care. We are the image of care, the essential link between compassionate care and the sophisticated imaging and therapeutic technologies we use.
We contribute our expertise to the diagnosis and treatment of hundreds of thousands of Ottawans each year. Our expert knowledge of imaging and/or therapeutic techniques and equipment, together with an extensive understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathology, image acquisition, treatment, and radiation protection makes us an integral part of the healthcare team that delivers quality care to our patients here at the QCH.
If you know or meet an MRT on your journey, please show them your appreciation. Help us celebrate this ever advancing profession that we are so passionate about.
